Self-governance: People choosing how to run their own community together, instead of being controlled by a king or dictator. Legitimate basis for the creation of laws: The rules have to be fair, make sense, and come from a source that everyone agrees on and trusts (like a constitution). Protect the rights of an independent citizenry: The main job of those rules is to defend your freedom so you can live your life without being bullied or unfairly controlled. In short: For people to rule themselves fairly, the rules need to be grounded in principles everyone respects, with the main goal of keeping everyone free and safe.
