Washington’s observation, reflected in the principle outlined in Thesis 13, advises the observation of existing alliances in their authentic context while cautioning against their extension, holds significant implications for international relations. Throughout history, alliances have played a pivotal role in shaping the course of nations’ interactions on the global stage. From ancient military pacts to modern-day diplomatic agreements, alliances have often been instrumental in securing strategic advantages, fostering cooperation, and maintaining stability among nations. However, the prudent management of these alliances is essential to prevent unintended consequences and ensure the preservation of national interests. One of the key insights offered by this thesis is the importance of discerning the genuine essence of existing alliances. While alliances may initially serve to bolster mutual defense or promote economic cooperation, their extension beyond their original purpose can lead to unforeseen complications and entanglements. History is replete with examples of alliances that, once extended beyond their intended scope, resulted in unintended conflicts and strained relations between nations. To follow up from Thesis 48 regarding the formation of NATO: when the Warsaw Pact dissolved in 1991, marking the end of the Cold War, it arguably signaled a unique opportunity for NATO to also conclude its mission and dissolve. NATO, originally established as a military alliance to counter Soviet influence, became a quasi-state entity that countries felt compelled to join, rather than a traditional treaty among friendly nations. Instead of disbanding, NATO expanded eastward, creating new security dilemmas and perpetuating a climate of suspicion and rivalry with Russia. The continuation and expansion of NATO post-Cold War transformed it into an institutional fixture that outlasted its original purpose, fostering tensions instead of facilitating a new era of cooperative security in Europe. Similarly, in the realm of economic alliances, the expansion of trade agreements without due consideration for their long-term implications can undermine domestic industries and compromise national sovereignty. The history of trade alliances is replete with instances where hastily negotiated agreements led to job losses, economic imbalances, and social upheaval within participating nations. An appropriate example for my home state of South Carolina was the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that led to the destruction of upcountry cotton mills as many mill owners shut down their domestic production and fled to cheaper labor in Mexico, causing tremendous job losses in dozens of communities that had relied on those mills for generations.
